Mercedes-AMG and IWC Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition “50th Anniversary of Mercedes-AMG” Speed Up in Style

New York, 2018: As part of Mercedes-AMG’s #SpeedUpInStyle social media campaign, the German marque has teamed up with its long-term partner IWC to produce a short film (above) starring Christoph Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC, who not only drives the Mercedes-AMG E 53 4Matic+ Coupé in New York but also sports the IWC Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition “50th Anniversary of Mercedes-AMG”.

IWC first partnered with Mercedes-AMG in 2004 to promote their Ingenieur collection.

The Mercedes-AMG E 53 4Matic+ Coupé is one of three new models, the other two being the CLS and the E-Class Cabriolet, that mark the first steps towards what the German marque describes as its “hybridised future with a leading-edge combination of sporty design, performance and efficiency”, thanks to a six-cylinder in-line engine with electric auxiliary compressor, EQ Boost starter-alternator and a 48 V on-board electrical system.

What the three new models have in common is an electrified 3.0-litre engine with twin turbo-charging because of an exhaust gas turbo-charger and an electric auxiliary compressor.

The six-cylinder engine is able to generate 320 kW and the maximum torque of 520 Nm. The EQ Boost starter-alternator momentarily provides an additional 16kW of output and 250 Nm of torque, feeding the 48 V on-board electrical system.

The AMG speedshift TCT 9G transmission and fully variable all-wheel drive system AMG Performance 4Matic+ are other technical features.

For the century sprint, the CLS 53 4Matic+ will accelerate from 0 to 100km per hour in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 270 km per hour.

As for the matching IWC wristwatch, it is the Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition “50th Anniversary of Mercedes AMG” reference IW380902 that is worn by Christoph Grainger-Herr.

Powered by the IWC Calibre 89361 Manufacture movement, this Ingenieur in a titanium case was introduced in 2017 at the Nürburgring. It features a magnetic field protection that can be seen through the case back and it is inspired by the brake discs of the Mercedes-AMG.

How do you use a 1/10th of a second chronograph?

The Maurice Lacroix Aikon Chronograph is one such wristwatch featuring the 1/10th of a second chronograph. Powered by a quartz movement, two versions are available: the 2017 model with a silver blue dial and the 2018 version with what the brand describes as a “cheerful” blue sunday dial.

Using the 2017 Maurice Lacroix Aikon Chronograph as an example, we explain how its chronograph function is used and how you can read elapsed time up to 1/10th of a second.

The 1/10th of a second chronograph counter is at 12 o’clock on the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Chronograph. Once activated, it completes one rotation every second. The 1/10th of a second hand will rotate non-stop for 30 seconds, thereafter, it will stop but the measurement of elapsed time continues till the chronograph function is manually stopped.

It will then display the elapsed time up to 1/10th of a second.
