The James Bond theme song for Spectre, Writing’s on the Wall, written and sung by Briton Sam Smith, has scored a first for this long-running and highly popular movie franchise. In October 2015, Writing’s on the Wall became the first ever James Bond theme song to reach number one in the UK charts.
Writing’s on the Wall is also the first James Bond theme song to be recorded by a male British solo artist (Sam Smith) since 1965, according to the Daily Mail. The two other James Bond movie theme songs that came close to number one were Adele’s Skyfall (2012) and Duran Duran’s A View to a Kill (1985). Both only managed to peak at second place.
The James Bond movie released in 1965 was Thunderball and it was directed by Terence Young. The Thunderball theme song, composed by John Barry and Don Black, was performed by Welsh singer Tom Jones. Thunderball stars Sean Connery as James Bond and his mission is to recover two nuclear warheads stolen by a Spectre agent in an extortion bid.
As for timepieces, what next for Omega and its partnership with the James Bond franchise? Actually, the writing had been on the wall for some time (pun intended).
Omega had only been producing commemorative timepieces such as the 2015 Seamaster Aqua Terra “James Bond” that tied in with the James Bond movies. It was time for one that was actually worn by the British master spy himself.
This explains why in 2015, Omega scored a first by launching a Seamaster model worn by James Bond himself (played by Daniel Craig) in Spectre.
This is the first time since 1995, the beginning of Omega’s partnership with the James Bond movie franchise, that a watch worn by Bond in the film, is also available as a commercial production piece, says Jose de Cardoso, president, Swatch Group S.E.A. of this limited edition model.
Interestingly, Craig himself scored a first with the James Bond movie franchise. Craig is the first blonde actor to play James Bond.
The watch worn by Craig is the Omega Seamaster 300 “Spectre” Limited Edition. Limited to 7,007 pieces, sales of this Omega Seamaster 300 “Spectre” began in September 2015.
The special feature on the Seamaster 300 “Spectre” Limited Edition is the bi-directional rotating bezel made of black ceramic and with a LiquidMetal 12-hour scale. Therefore, the bezel can be used as a reference for the second time zone.
Other features to look out for will be the “lollipop” central sweep seconds hand and the five-stripe black and grey NATO strap. Then there is the 007 (we like it when they say “double-o seven”) gun logo that is engraved on the bracelet’s strap holder.
